Re: Learning more than one language at once?
There comes a point, though, when it is nigh impossible to use new words. There are only so many words per day that are going to get used. In fact, this is probably the first time in over a month I've used the word "exhilirating."

Re: Thai or Lao? Let the debate begin
Yes, every person born in Thailand learns central Thai - however, the usefulness of "Isan" wasn't the question. It was more of - for those who think it is a Thai dialect and NOT Lao, what sort of evidence is there to support that claim? I pose there is none and that Isan is 100 percent Lao, with the...

Spoonerism Revival
Going through the archive, I came across this:
http://www.solvethai.com/forum/viewtopi ... =28&t=8387
Anyone here know more than what has been listed or care to recommend any good sites?
Also, how else can we play around with words in Thai? (not a test question - just me asking)

Thai or Lao? Let the debate begin
Before getting to the question, let me preface it by saying I'm looking for a logical discussion on the topic.
Northern Thai and Isan - Thai dialects or Lao? I'm not so familiar with the ins and outs of Northern Thai, but Isan dialect seems to me to be a completely Lao dialect.
Thoughts?

Maintaining Fluency
As the topic suggests, I want to say something about maintaining fluency in an L2 (or L3, L4, etc.) I will only be talking about how to maintain fluency in a situation in which one is not surrounded by the language. Rather than go into a lengthy treatise, I will just list off the ways I make sure no...

Re: Learning more than one language at once?
The key might be not to overdo it. It's better to learn 500 words and retain them then learn double or triple that, but forget them. Also, keep engaged. If I notice I haven't had a chance to use my German in some time (say a week or two) I will read news in German or join a German language chatroom ...

Yes, I have white skin. I've been in Bangkok my entire time here - other than when traveling, of course.

Re: Learning more than one language at once?
If I'm by myself, I focus purely on reading/writing for vocabulary building and grammar structure practice. As for speaking... Lao - when I go to Laos, I'll try it out :) Thai - everyday here in Thailand Burmese - I'm just trying to get a feel for the language - this is slow going and my schedule is...

Re: If not Thai, what language?
Well, first off - it took me months to get comfortable with Thai script (about 3, I think). I'm usually good with languages, but for some reason, starting off in Thai was a bit challenging. I've had the opposite experience as you regarding speaking Thai - I've found the Thais to be incredibly encour...
