Re: How many farangs can speak Thai?

Seeing as you get tonz of responses on your FCLT facebook site, you should make a "poll" asking foreigners to rate their thai ability. You'd have to come up with some "criteria" for them to rate themselves and you'll have to factor in that to a person, foreigners who speak thai here overestimate the...

Re: How many farangs can speak Thai?

It is really hard to get good solid numbers as far as foreigners who speak coherent thai (as opposed to "horse-peak-thai", "2-word-tourist-thai" or "taxi-thai"). I'd say from personal experience the percentage of foreigners who speak coherent thai is quite low. Then again, are we talking about an ex...

Re: How many farangs can speak Thai?

Well, I think we're gonna hafta delve into Stu's assertions that he's met "tons of foreigners over the years who speak thai" a little more. LOOK at his resume, who he's worked for, who he's taught and you'll see he's interacted with a demographic of foreigner which is about as far from the "rank-n-f...

Re: How many farangs can speak Thai?

Good question, although I'd imagine real statistics are gonna be hard to find... By using the "thai-f-word" for foreignerz, I assume you mean white people rather than asianz. In my travels to the various thai language schools around Bangkok, I've had the occasion to meet some pretty adept foreign sp...

Re: Learning Plateaus

Both the lack of first person pronouns in colloquial spoken thai, AND the myriad of pronouns you can choose depending on familiarity, respect, etc can throw foreigners for a loop. :o Listen to thais talk and you immediately find out they don't ผม/ดิฉัน all that often when making first person stateme...

Re: Learning Plateaus

Good question Patrick; Typically a thai walkin' in on a conversation half way thru already knows the people who are speaking together very well, or they wouldn't walk up. They can make the leap-in-logic as far as who's being spoken about because they're of the same group (friends, family, work-mates...

The Low-Down on ED Visas for Studying Thai

SORRY IN ADVANCE THIS IS SO LONG!!! Stick with it, especially if you're on an ED visa learning thai... ;) There have been some big changes to the education visa and extension process for foreigners learning Thai this year. I want to take some time and let you guyz know what's what. First some histor...

Re: ซะงั้น

It would appear from perusing the thai language only thai dominated forums (Sanook, DekD, Pantip) that you're not the only one who wants to know what this term meanz.. This is about the best answer I could find that seems to match with how I had thaiz explain it to me ซะงั้น - คำอุทานเชิงไม่ได...

Re: Learning Thai from the opposite sex

In colloquial spoken thai there is a HUGE difference in how thai guyz and thai gurlz talk. :o However, if you have no thai guy friends, and all you do is hang around your thai g/f and her friends you're unlikely to be exposed to the difference. :? Unfortunately thai guyz make up such a small p...

Re: Learning Plateaus

There are numerable times in learning thai that people "hit the wall", or seem to plateau out. In reading the regimen that the poster is following it seems very LONG on "drills", listening, reading, but very SHORT on conversations with with real live thaiz!! In fact they didn't even mention that the...
