Re: Learning to type in Thai

I agree with ReubenA that motivation is critical in learning.. With that being said; I disagree that they're going to pick up "touch typing" or even "hunt-n-peck typing" Thai by reading answering face book or line chat. Especially given the "thai penchant" of misspelling words on porpoise, err on pu...

Re: Thai common presumption about tourists.

I think this is nothing but a rant by a "young" (from their childhood toyz), "privileged" from the way they outline their up-bringing, Asian. There are just too many broad brush analogies comparing what foreign movies (which are MOVIES, not real life  ) and asian movies (which are also ...

Re: What got you interested in the Thai language?

Also, I'm not one for having people speak for me - especially when there's some sort of business involved. A Thai speaking on your behalf may settle for what would not be the best deal, simply because it saves face. I agree with "farang84" I am also not a fan of someone "speaking for me". Also, now...

Re: Why are kids failing at learning language?

Similar in Thailand, Thai's rarely can recognize tones, yet people who learn Thai as a second language tend to know them quite well. Interesting comment about the "tones in thai" PatrickK". It's NOT that thai people can't recognize the differences in the tones of words which to foreign ears sound s...

Re: Thai or Lao? Let the debate begin

Well, your post wasn't that clear (or possibly I am not the sharpest tool in the shed ;) ). I did try to contribute in some way by pointing out the great disparity between "versions" of Isaan. What I'm NOT is a cunning linguist! I'll leave the definitions of what is a dialect versus what con...

'Cram Course' for Conversational Thai

Because I've been to quite a few thai language schools in Bangkok and written reviews for many of them on Catherine Wentworth's website women learn thai; I had an interesting opportunity come my way when I was visiting a school. In talking to the owner, they said they'd be willing to do a "custom co...

Re: Thai or Lao? Let the debate begin

Well, it's a fact, more people in thailand speak one of the Isaan dialects (which there are a LOT but primarily 6 or 7) in their home than speak central thai. Now be careful throwing out there that Isaan thai is a "Lao dialect"! You'll sure piss off the 6+ million born-bred-rice fed Laotians...

Re: Methods of learning - Speak, Read, Write first?

"PatrickK" I honestly wished I "played" on facebook because I think I could be a contributor to the group, but in wading thru the pages of stuff, it appears really good topics get "buried" pretty fast.. I think it's a great group with a good following though. I only wish more people from f/b would c...

Re: Learning to type in Thai

Indeed, that Thai Notes site is a GREAT free resource to learn how to touch type thai! :) :) There is another good resource called "type in thai" http://typeinthai.com/. Some parts of the site are okay, but I can't get the "challenge" tab to work. It used to be really great too with different levels...

Re: The 'Sin Sod' (pay your wife's family upon marriage)

The topic of สินสอด has been beaten to death on every thai related forum out on the inter-web since foreign guyz have been marryin' thai women.. First OFF, according to the mythical beast known as "thai culture"; a bride to be would NEVER, as in NEVER EVER bring up the topic of สินสอด to her h...
